In The Inventive Magician's Handbook....With Props, I discuss the genius and kindness of Martin Lewis, whose insights in creating "The Sidewalk Shuffle" inspired my development of "Nightmare Santa." Well, just today, the mail arrived with a new treasure for my collection - one of Martin's very own wands. While I'd be honored to own any wand that belonged to Martin (and, in fact, I obtained another of Martin's wands from his estate - the El Duco Wand Lighter), this one is very special.
The item that arrived today is a prototype for a wand that Martin designed and marketed - his "Silent Wand." Unlike the final version, this one is short (about 7") and does not include the special PK feature that made it into the final cut. But this prototype has the aluminum core and thick rubberized covering that featured prominently in Martin's design. It's a lovely thing to hold: even at this size - about half the size of the final version - the prototype has the heft and grip that makes it feel magical and reassuring. And the thick rubber shell ensures that it is, as the name suggests, completely silent when pushed up against a coin, cup or can. It's just a wonderful, solid instrument that emerged from the mind of an innovator.
For those curious about the "Silent Wand," there's a short video in which Martin discusses the careful, thoughtful design choices that went into his creation. You can see it below:
As you can imagine, the prototype Silent Wand will occupy an honored place among my magic possessions. Many thanks to Suzanne Lewis for making it available. If you're interested in obtaining some of Martin's books, props and wonderful creations, visit Magikraft Studios at https://magikraft.com/
